"What is periodontal disease and why do I need to see a periodontist to have it treated?"
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and in the placement of dental implants.
The word "periodontal" refers to the gum tissue and bone around a tooth. Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth. Left untreated, periodontal disease is one of the primary causes of adult tooth loss.
As a periodontist, Dr. Spivey received three additional years of education beyond dental school in this specialty. He has additional training and certification in the placement of dental implants and experience successfully placing hundreds of implants in both simple and complex circumstances. When you choose our office as a health care partner, you have chosen a staff who is committed to preserving your smile, and who has the training and expertise to offer you options to accomplish this goal.
